The Living Expression

main image
1 John 1:1 (NKJV) That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life—
1 John 1:1 (TPT) We saw him with our very own eyes. We gazed upon him and heard him speak. Our hands actually touched him, the one who was from the beginning, the Living Expression of God

One of the most amazing events to ever happen on the earth is when Jesus came. You know the story: He was born of a virgin, lived a perfect life, was eventually crucified on a cross; and a few days later was resurrected. All of that is amazing, but it is important to know “why” He came. The easy answer to that question is this. He knew I needed a Savior and I couldn’t be one for myself. He knew I needed someone perfect to accomplish what I could never do on my own. He knew the requirements of God’s law called for a perfect sacrifice and for the perfect blood of this perfect sacrifice to be spilled to fulfill the requirements of the law. He did all of that and more. While that seems to be enough of an answer for why Jesus came to earth, I think there is one more thing that we might need to examine. I think He also came so that we might know the heart of the Father in a new and better way.

John 1:1 says that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. 1 John 1:1 call Jesus the Word of life. If we are looking for a great translation for what this “Word of LIFE” really is, we need to look no further than the translation we find here. In essence, the best translation for what the “Word of LIFE’ really means is the “Living Expression.” In other words, Jesus came to earth and served as the “living expression” of the heart of God. We find in Jesus One who shows us more about the Father the Old Testament ever did. In Jesus, we find God to be more relational and more merciful than we ever imagined possible. In Jesus, we find not just our Savior, but our well, our healer, and our hope. When we see Jesus, we see God. He is the perfect“LIVING EXPRESSION” of all that the Father really is. His heart is God’s heart. His actions are God’s actions. His love is God’s love.

Time for the Church to be the CHURCH

main image
Hebrews 10:23-25 (NKJV) Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhort- ing one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

In Hebrews we are challenged to do these 4 things as the church:

  1. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope.

  2. Let us consider one another.

  3. Let’s not forsake the assembling of ourselves together.

  4. Exhort one another as we see the DAY approaching.

Why did the writer of Hebrews think these four things were so important? The answer to that question is simple; he knew that we needed each other to survive life in this chaotic world. He knew that we would never serve humanity at our full potential unless we first had a safe place to be restored. In essence, being part of the church is twofold:

  1. We need the fellowship of other believers. (This is the “inside the part of the wall.”) Without this fellowship and the protection it offers, we become very vulnerable. Being alone is a recipe for disaster as we live life.

  2. The fellowship we enjoy as a part of the body enables us to better serve the hurting. (This is the part when we go outside the walls.”) Together we can accomplish much more than we ever could alone. In other words, being a part of the body always includes outreach to the world. If we only do the “meeting together” part and fail to also do the “reaching out” part, we miss half our reason for being His. My challenge to all of us is this: We need to stay in the battle by meeting together as the body and we need to use this platform as the launching point for touching the lost and broken.
