A Price We Can’t Afford To Pay

God is deadly serious about us approaching Him with the reverence that is due Him. He explains the seriousness of this to Israel in the book of Malachi in a way that was meant to quickly get their attention . He speaks of three very specific things that Israel will forfeit if they choose to continue dishonoring Him in worship. He says, I will curse your blessings, rebuke your offspring, and put you out of my presence. I cannot imagine my life on this earth minus either of these three. Let’s look at them one at a time and then decide what we are willing to forfeit.

One, I can’t fathom living one day outside His blessings. It’s His blessings that sustain me. I literally have nothing outside of what He has given to me. Two, I can’t begin to imagine the thought of God rebuking my offspring. In this particular verse, offspring in the Hebrew is “zera” and it translates into two very important things. It means your harvest (the thing you put your hand to) and your children (your literal offspring). Can you imagine living life so recklessly that you even damage the view of Jesus that your kids see? I don’t even want to imagine my kids living life without a relationship with my Father. And finally, He says; “I will put you out of my presence.”

When I read this sentence, I almost cried. All the peace, joy, and hope I have living life on this earth comes from the moments I get to spend in His Presence. His presence is life to me. To imagine living without It causes my heart to shudder. God is calling us into deep fellowship. We cannot miss the fellowship that He is offering for anything in this world. We cannot, under any circumstance, continue to bring Him less than our best worship. The price for missing the mark on this is too great. Living without Him is a price we can’t afford to pay!

And now, O priests, this command is for you. 2 If you will not listen, if you will not lay it to heart to give glory to my name, says the LORD of hosts, then I will send the curse on you and I will curse your blessings; indeed I have already cursed them, because you do not lay it to heart. 3 I will rebuke your offspring, and spread dung on your faces, the dung of your offerings, and I will put you out of my presence"
Malachi 2:1-2:3 (NRSV)
