It's Time to Light Things Up

main image

Ephesians 5:8-14 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14 Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep,
Arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

Paul has this “NOT SO SUBTLE” way of calling us out sometimes in the middle of a verse of scripture. The above is one such occasion. If we simply just cut to the point, we see Paul calling us to a radical obedience that he believes will change the world. Not only will it change the world, but it will completely transform the way we talk, walk, and live as children in the kingdom of God. What is he saying?
For one, he is saying to all believers; “If you are going to call yourself a believer, a Christian, then live like you are one. If you really have met the LIGHT, then stop walking like you haven’t. If you really have come into the LIGHT, then it’s high time your life reflected the change. You ought always now to be walking with the fruit of the Spirt readily apparent in your life. Furthermore, if the fruit of the Spirit isn’t visible in your life, then maybe the Spirit isn’t in your life.” Beyond that, he says, “If you are actually children of the LIGHT, then should now be having no fellowship with those whose works are ‘unfruitful.’ In fact, not only should you not be having fellowship with the unfruitful, but don’t even speak of their deeds.” Is Paul saying we shouldn’t speak to sinners? No! Not at all. He is saying that you shouldn’t be in fellowship with them. He isn’t saying not to love them or speak truth to them. He is saying that our only response to them is to tell them of the grace and greatness of Jesus. Instead of ignoring their “lostness,” we should be telling them about the answer to their pain. He is calling the church to be the church. He is trying to awaken us so that in the days ahead when we are in dire need of God’s voice and Presence that we will be awake enough to have it. He is calling us to Himself. Listen and respond. It’s time to LIGHT things up!
