  1. The Broken Vessels

Psalm 31:12 I have become forgotten like one dead, out of mind. I am like a broken vessel.

  • “The Destroyed Vessel”
    • Its clay could not or would not take the heat.
    • Although the fire of the kiln usually produced durability in vessels, in the broken vessel; it produced a crack – usually around the lip.
    • When this happened, it was cast aside if it could not be fixed.

  • The Potter’s Fix
    • The Potter, nearly every day after work, would walk the fields searching for a tick-like insect.
    • This insect’s blood, when crushed, was then placed in the cracks and broken places of the vessel.
    • The potter would crush a tick-like insect and mix its blood with clay powder.

  • Sound familiar?
    • This is a picture of what happened on the cross when the blood of Jesus is placed in our brokenness.

“After a vessel that had broken in the fire was remolded with the blood mixture, it was placed right back into the same fire that had cracked it. The potter repeated the procedure again and again, as often as was necessary, to save the vessel. Only after the vessel had been re-fired and came from the kiln un-cracked was it released for service.”

  1. The Vessels of Wrath – Romans 9:22
Romans 9:21-22(NKJV) Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?22 What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction…
(While it is highly unlikely and even ludicrous for a potter to make a pot just to destroy it, the potter still has the right to do as he wishes.)
·      When a broken vessel refuses to accept the blood, it becomes a vessel of wrath.
·     There is no honor or joy for the potter in the plight of this vessel.
·     While it is not the fault nor the plan of the potter that this vessel becomes one of wrath,
he must still allow it to be one.
·     On the Day of Judgment, God will be forced to determine that some vessels are “Vessels of Wrath.”
·     On the Day, the Vessel of Wrath will receive the full measure of God’s judgment.
·     Even though it breaks His heart to destroy it, He will.
